Skyline High School

These are photos from a failed photo mission. It seemed simple enough. Go to Skyline, Tyson feebles the rail, and we leave. Not so much. Tyson boardslid the 13 rail about 15 times (at least). Just when he was about to go for the feeble...cops show up. No tickets were issued, but it was a total buzzkill for the night. I lost all my good shooting light (I was planning on shooting with Jovi somewhere after the Skyline session, but we sat there with the cops for nearly an hour), and the photo we went to shoot didn't happen. Here is what came of it. Matt ollied the stairs, and here is one of Tyson's boardslides.

Brodie Penrod : Skateboarder

I have been working on a project with Brodie for a couple months now. We have gotten some good photos. Here is one of the photos that has been pushed out of the group by a better trick. Even though I really like the lighting in this image, the difficulty of another trick we shot out-ranks this front salad. Thus, it falls to the cutting room floor. However, it isn't entirely lost or done in vain, as it sees the "light of day" here on the blog.

SLUG Magazine Summer of Death: Summer Detention

This past weekend skateboarders convened in the parking lot of the University of Utah Trax station to begin the final SLUG Mag skate competition of the summer. The contest was unlike most skate comps held in perfectly contained areas designated for skateboarding, aka skateparks. Oh no. This contest was held at real skate spots found throughout the University of Utah campus. 35 skaters were divided up into 5 groups of 7, and each group had a tour guide to lead them through campus to designated spots where judges and a photographer were posted up waiting. They got a 15 minute session and as soon as the next group showed up, they got 3 more tries and then had to move on to the next spot. Sounds like fun, right?
I was the photographer posted up at the first spot, which was a nice 8 foot flat gap. Once the last group had come through, I packed up my gear and cruised down to the last spot (which was the 8 rail by the stadium) and managed to get a handful of shots there too.
Good turnout, lots of fun, and sheer anarchy...except for the perfectly organized groups skating designated spots in timed runs , of course.
This beautiful switch kickflip ended in a broken ankle.

Matt Fisher : nollie backside 180

Omar : nollie flip

Dyllan Call : front feeble

Dyllan Call : front salad

Ed "Changsta" Chang : switch heelflip

Kevin killed it with a nollie inward heelflip here, and a nollie 5-0 on the 8 rail.

I don't know this kid's name, but let me list the tricks he did over this: kickflip melon (pictured), backside 180 airwalk (pictured below), backside 180 heelflip, attempted backside 360 kickflip...

Sneaker Freaker

On a non-photographic note...I got some new shoes this month. Anyone who knows me very well, knows that I have a thing for shoes. I know, I know, I am ridiculous. I just had to post the Air Jordan IVs. This shoe originally came out in 1989, and I have thought it was cool since I was 9 and my friend's older brother had a pair. My wife thinks I'm silly for wanting basketball shoes. It's all about the nostalgia on these.
The Trainer 2 SBs are also in an original Air Jordan I colorway. Nothing nostalgic about these, they are just awesome. Thanks Travis for going out of your way to help me get my hands on the Trainers.

Twin Lens Reflex 2006- Revisited

I shot these photos on a Kalloflex twin lens reflex camera back in 2006. The camera is pictured above in the Polaroid transfer. My dad bought it for $7 at a Forest Service auction many years ago. Unfortunately, the shutter is locked up now and the camera is now a decoration on my shelf. These shot were all from the same roll, and cross processed.

I thought it would be appropriate to post a portrait of Sam that I shot with film--medium format film at that. Sam is a film purist, but not to the point of being a self -righteous, digital hating, Holga toting hipster. (Besides, Dianas are the new Holga).

These photos were taken by my friend Sam Milianta. They are all shot on film, and the black and white was processed by Sam in his makeshift bathroom/darkroom. He is awesome. Thanks for shooting me Sam.

Micah Wood: Skateboarder

Micah Wood is a skateboarder from Salt Lake City. He skates for BC. I met him 2 years ago and was blown away by his skill on a skateboard. I think I have come away with a great photo every time I have skated with him. The first time I met him he switch kickflipped over the white rail and backside heelflipped the white rail...in the rain.
This is portfolio of Micah--some old and some as recent as last Saturday. Enjoy.
Switch ollie last week.

I know some crazy tricks have been done down this, but just look at that style. And the cops showed up before any real tricks could go down.

Sean Winskowski: Skateboarder

Sean Winskowski is skateboarder from Midvale. He rips and has style for days. This is basically six photos of two tricks. Even though they are the same trick three times, each one has a distinct quality that I really like and want to show. Besides...this is just a blog and I can show you whatever I want.

NYC Revisited

Here are some photos from my trip to New York City in March of 2007. Again, these are almost all shots that were never really seen by anyone but myself. All but the last 2 images were shot with an Olympus OM1 and a sweet 50mm F/1.4 lens. I really need a lens like that for my Nikon gear. The NYC skyline and St. Patrick's Cathedral were shot with my Nikon digi.

Paul Adams and John Telford - These are two of my professors...

They like to clown around.

Orchid - Decor in Ilan Rubin's studio.
Cross processed...I don't remember if this is Kodak or Fuji.

Chair and portfolio files - Ilan Rubin's studio. Check him out. Ilan is amazing.
